Tales from the Riverbank (5) Dark Skies …

I had no idea, until we were enlightened last night by the Forestry Commission initiative, that we were in such a unique and privileged position.  The Milky Way often glows above our farmhouse in a glorious streak of light with the rest of the dark sky pricked with dots of light in patterns and shapes as yet we are unfamiliar with.  We are now on a mission to learn more.  Most people do not get to see the Milky Way in their entire lives we were told  – and there were we taking it for granted!  As Alton Albany Farm is also a distance from the village of Barr it does not suffer from light pollution so when we look southwest from our deck we are in the perfect position to stargaze.  We are going to arm ourselves with star guide, binoculars, hats, gloves and hot chocolate and take a look … the sky is clear!
